Hey guys, i got a clown tang a few days ago and it looks relatively well; likes to pick at algae off my rocks, swims around happily, but theres one problem, the only food it eats is tiny bits of shrimp, maybe like 2-3 pieces only as well... So for sure, it is eating, but just eating really little, are these guys like strictly herbivores as in i should only feed them seaweed or is it common for them to eat mysis, spirulina brine shrimp??? im also adding some garlic extract as an attractant :) Any other tips for target feeding is very appreciated, thanks :D

My LFS got this tang about 2 days after i bought it, i know i should have waited but i couldnt help it, its soooo nice.....

Are we talking about Acanthurus lineatus?

A lovely fish that grows to about 15 inches and is a herbivore

Seffie x

seffie, thats the one :hyper: . With mysis shrimp, it eats it and then spits it back out now. Does that mean hes not use to it, or does it mean he doesnt like it or what?? i tried krill cause of its attractant as well, but no good. i also put in some nori yesterday and its gone today. too bad i didnt see which fish ate it :(. still looking for ways of target feeding :look: .

thanksss! :fun:

Seffie said it's a herbivore hence it probably doesn't like eating meat too much...

My blue tang loves shrimp, krill, bloodworms, squid, everything with meat  and i have always thought all tangs were herbivores . Saying this i thought the clown tang would like some meat like my blue tang as well  . apparently i am wrong  thx for the reminder :good:

what size is your tank?

right now its in my 65 gallon since its only about 2-3 inches, im planning to move it to my 200 gallon as it grows bigger (IF it lasts  ). It has gotten alot skinner compared to last week when i got it. For some odd reason, its choosing to pick at my rocks for seaweed instead of munching on my nori  .. What should i do?

thx

You need to be feeding tqangs like him atleast 4 -6 times a day. They have ineffective digestive systems and are constantly eating in the wild. Hes probably starving. You need a well varied diest including nori/veggies.

They are lovely fish, but VERY aggressive when adult.

thx for advice but the main point is so that he would eat, but he's not eating my food, im offering a huge variety of foods: clams, nori and nori with garlic, cucumbers, spirulina brine shrimp, mysis, squid, krill, and much more.. I should have alot of amphipods too, since i have plenty of LR. right now im thinking of giving him back to the store but i doubt i can get him without stressing out any of my corals or causing damage to the reef. when i try target feeding him, he swims away thinking that i want to eat him. im considering that hes done for, theres just no other way.
