I currently have an angel with a bit of finrot, which I have been treating with interpet anti fungus & finrot.

Last week we added 7 more neons to the shoal of 6.

4 days ago, my nitrite reading went up to 0.1, and I've tested again today, and it's at 0.8!

I realise this is WAY too high, so will do a big water change. I was given advice not to feed them for a couple of days, but I did that when the reading was at 0.1

What do I do now? How can I get the readings back to normal?

I recently added a 4 litre DIY co2 system to the tank, can this effect it?

Any help is gratefully appreciated, cheers.

I've just found one of my Penguin tetra dead :/

She was fine last night, so this can't of caused the nitrite spike, could it? Or did the nitrites kill her?

My other stats are:

Ammonia: 0
PH: 7.5
Nitrate: 40/50ppm
NITRITE: [after water change this morning] 0.6

Another question has now arisen though..

I only had 2 penguin tetra as they were given to me from my dad, they are around 6 years old, but now there is only one, and they are shoaling fish..

..Will the single penguin be alright on his own? He seems alright, but I can't buy him any buddies as the tanks already fully stocked :/

Once again, any help would be brilliant.

:/ Just found another casualty.. A neon tetra, half eaten too.

What is going on in my tank? We should have 13 neons but I can only count 9 now.

Does anyone have any ideas? Would the tetra deaths cause only nitrites to rise?

Please help, this sucks.

on the count of the neons, the angels could of eaten the new neons as they would be fairly small?

or they could of died as disease which is common in neons.

sorry can't help you on why only your nitrites are rising unless you had an ammonia spike first?

:good:

I was thinking that might of happened too, although our 2 angels have never bothered neons before, and they never seem to chase them at all. So maybe not?

I've vac'd the whole tank, squeezed out the debris from the filters, couldn't find any more dead neons though - and theres still only 9. Would other fish eat the dead neons to leave no trace? It's as if they've dissappeared.

The current readings are now:

Ammonia - 0
Ph - 7.5
Nitrite - 0.2
Nitrate - 30/40 ppm

A lot better readings :) Hopefully the tank will start to balance again?

Wilder...

I heard you were good at this sorta stuff? Anyone got any advice?

Angels hunt neon tetra's in the wild so they could be picking them off, you have a nitrite reading so do some water changes to see if the finrot clears up.
With some fish a slight nitrite reading can finish them off.
I would buy a bacterial med like myxazin by waterlife you might need to use that if the water changes don't clear the finrot up.
Also try and increase aeration in the tank if you can.
