I know everyone says to hold it to the white with light behind you, but when i do that i get a tinge of green, like there is ammonia. I did a control test of ammonia-less water and the two results (it and my tank) came out with that slightly green tinge. What i do to read now is just put it on my white desk and look at it like that.

Always best to hold it back from the white a little bit. By holding it directly on the white you will get light bend which will cause the reflection to bounce back into the liquid giving it a darker tinge.

Thats my explanation and i am sticking to it :)

And remember, if you dont get the colour that you are happy with, you can always Photoshop it. Works for me :)

I always hold it flush with the card with a natural light source behind me.

the API kit is alot easier to read than the nutrafin one IME

i just place card near a window and stand the tube next to it

Yeah, it is a fantastic kit, i just get really worried. Do i actually have ammonia :(

if you keep at your maintence and have a cycled tank then I think the chances are pretty slim.

unless you massively over-feed or add more fish then your bacteria should take care of any ammonia

I have this problem too, the Nutrafin Ammonia kit is better.

My faves

AMMONIA - Nutrafin or Tetra
NITRITE - They all the same in my experience, i'd go for API simply on cost per test
NITRATE - Tetra

I know what you mean about the API ammonia test. I have started to wonder if Im colour blind because the two shades of lime green after the yellow always get me. Although I can tell the difference on the card, I can never tell if my sample looks like one or the other.

If the colour of your tank water matches the tap water, consider it job done.

And like gaz said, read with the light behind you.

Yea i find it the same, im allways taking the tube allover the house and gettin differnt colours of yellow/green.

So i got some water wich i knew had 0 ammonia in it, tested that and it matched my tank water :)
