Sorry and girls :)

This is my first post in the main Pool .

Its about Siamese Fighters. I have just filled my tank with all live bearers as i am going to start a marine tank with a few more aggressive fish in the waters (only a few mind).
But in the Tropical i am thinking of putting 2 siamese fighters.
I do not think they are predatory by eating youngsters but only have a 'Dust Up' amongst themselves now and again.

Am i right to introduce them to my peaceful wild bearing tank?

Thankyou.

you mean 1 male and 1 female? 2 males will fight to the death or as near to, hence their name.

Others will say don't put them in with livebearers but IMO as long as theeyre not fancy tailed like Guppies then you can.

I have 1 male Siamese in a 125Ltr tank with 2 black mollies and 1 silver balloon + plecs and they all live peacefully . I do read posts saying that they can't live in a community, but I haven't seen any bad signs in mine.

If anything I see the opposite to aggression with the 4 fish (all a similar size) swimming together

its my understanding that 2 males never and 1 male and 1 female only if breeding. so all in all unless its a load of females on their own they should be kept singly

Unless breeding them, bettas should never be kept with other bettas. It won't be so much a "Dust up" as a "Blood bath". It is also a risk to put a male betta in with anything that has longer, flowy fins as he might mistake them for another male betta. I think you would be ok to try adding 1 male betta to the mix, just keep an eye on him and make sure he's not terrorizing the guppies, also be prepared to remove him if he's being a little stinker. Female bettas are more tolerant of each other but you need to house at least a group of 4 together to prevent bullying and spread out any aggression. A male and a female are also not a good idea, one of them will 99.9% end up maimed or dead. (For a 2 inch fish, they sure are little buggers, huh?)
Also, welcome to the forum! :D

i have a male fighter in wit my angle 2 dwarf gouarmis n a few other fish he is fin loves the big space n they stay out of eachothers way tho i didnt rest easy 4 the first few weeks as i was monitorying very closely.
the same male was in a tank full of female fighters (baught n put in the tank as a female) n over night he killed them all (thats how he ended up in the big tank)

Hiya,

I have a male betta in my community tank quite successfully - the main thing is my tank has lots of plants and some caves so he can have his own space. They will attack most brightly coloured fish (although mine is ok with my neons) - depends on the temperament of the specific fish really.

Shouldn't keep more than 1 together unless you are having females and then I believe there should be a good group of them like 5 or 6 to spread the aggression as even they will fight.

I love my betta in my community tank, but best to keep an eye on him and have a back up plan should things start getting messy!

Good luck!

Vicky

Ye Vicky is right, 4-6 females is what you will hear. But you wont really get encoraged to much by others to put a male in a community tank, just like a disaster waiting to happen.
