So, I've gotten a nice 10 gallon (40L) tank recently. I'm currently fishless cycling it and watching all the trimmings from a friend's tank begin to take hold and grow. And as I sit here and gaze at my empty and slowly developing tank, I of course am wondering, "What can I put in this thing?"

Mostly it comes down to numbers and combinations.

If I could ever find them, I would love to put a bunch of Scarlet Badis in there, but since I have never seen one in real life (but will likely ask the lfs during these development stages), I've written them off the list.

Things I've decided I would like (I know there are more, but I don't neccessarily like them):

Pygmy Cories
Any other cory
Peacock Gudgeons
Ember Tetras

What I've decided, is I would like to have a couple of species.

And I'm wondering, primarily as this is a pet setup, if 5-6 tetras and 2 peacocks would work?

I'd like to think the colours of both species would contrast nicely with each other. But I do not know a whole lot about peacock gudgeon behaviour other than them being relatively passive. Do they swim at the top? Or at the bottom? Something tells me it's nearish to the bottom since they are cave spawners. How would they handle an environment with other brightly coloured fish?

For reference, the tank is going to be heavily planted, and I don't particularly plan on adding fish until it's cycled and until the plants are tall enough to make it look less like a barren landscape scattered with bushes.

I'm open to ideas, just if anything I'd love to find a way to create a tank with some of those gudgeons (they've taken a hold on me *sigh*). Mostly I need help with numbers of fish. (As I know the inch per gallon rule works, but other factors can offset that and allow one to bend the rule a bit.)

Hello fellow Georgian. Thought about white cloud maountain minnows? They are hardy, colorful, peaceful, eat anything, etc. As far as stocking goes, in my limited experience I find that one smallish fish per gallon is really OK, just keep up the PWCs. I use oversize filters and have no problem with over stocking. I have a 10g (3 small filters) with about 25 WCMMs and they are quite happy and healthy. BTW, in what part of Ga. are you located?

I have, but aren't they coldwater? I'll consider them. They are rather cute.

At the moment, I'm in Savannah, but at various times of the year I can be found lurking nearish to Marietta.

Yes, they are cold water fish. Should you pass this way, I could hook you up with some. Mine are especially nice, more of a golden color. The one ones I've seen in stores are more silvery.
