hi i have been keeping oscars for a long time and at the moment have a 55(uk)gal tank housing reggie and ronnie oscar....

they are two 6inch tiger oscars, anyway my son&wife want another tank setup for them to look after(my son is 7yrs old)and gain experiance of keeping fish...

we have decided on a jewel tank because they are a great tank with high manufacturing standards and more crucially for my wife they are attractive...

we have got to buy a corner tank because of space in the living area and this is what we have decided on

link: www.juwel-aquarium.de/en/trigon.htm

now my question is this does this limit our choice of species because of the size of the volume of water coming from hieght and depth and not so much length...

we are looking at a peaceful community tank with a nice shoal of some sort of tetra(ideas for type and amount) as the main species and maybe some freshwater crabs(sorry forgot name at the moment) and maybe a community of corys(will they live in peace with the crabs or will one eat the other)...

also a few butterflie fish because my son is fasinated with the look of these fish...

anyway sorry for the long post but i am looking for answers and help and a guy in a shop reccommended this forum for friendly advice ..

so questions again....1) does a corner tank cause any problems with keeping certain type of fish
2)thinking of a shoal of tetras (neon tetras),how many of them or even a different type
3)freshwater crabs(very small, red in colour)are they ok in community tank
4)corys are they ok with crabs and how many to make them happy
5)thinking of a sand bottom with bogwood and stones...dont want plants si this ok

anyway thanks for your help and time

To answer your questions in order:

1) High tanks hold less fish than low tanks, so if your tank is high you want to be light on stocking. I really wouldn't call the Juwel tank hight though, so you can stock around 1 inch a gal.

2) In such a tank you could have four or five schools of tetras. You could do 8 neons, and maybe 6 pencilfish of some species, 6 glowlight tetras, and maybe 6 red eyed tetras. With 6-8 cories at the bottom.

3) I would either get crabs and no fish or no fish and get crabs. You can try some freshwater shrimp, but I would not try crabs or crayfish.

4) See above

5) Sand is definately a big advantage when keeping cories. If you don't get live plants make sure to get lots of fake ones to provide cover and keep the fish calm.

Good luck

thanks i have taken that all on board and yes we like the idea of shoaling fish and i like the idea of differnt types of tetra....

will shrimp live with bottom dwelling fish (like the corys) or will they be eaten....also is sand more high maintance than gravel or stone(when cleaning it for food debris)...

yes i will be fake plants because i want it to look natural but we dont wnat the hassle of trying to grow real plants

why is that, because they dont belong in a tetra tank or because they will eat the fish.....
it was my wife who liked the look of them at the garden centre....

no it's because

no fish and crabs

and

crabs and no fish
