While I idly wait for my 55g to cycle, I think how many more gallons of space a person could have if they just dug out and concreted a "pond" in their house. Never mind resale value plummeting. :D But if we could just do what we wanted, what an idea that would be.

Anyone know people who have done this? I see Chinese restaurants with koi in them like this. Wonder if it would smell bad? How cool to not worry about glass and all, just have a big indoor pond with lots of surface area. That room could be kept warmer for tropicals. I guess if the fish stayed at the bottom a lot you might not be able to view them as well as in an aquarium.

it would be like having a poorly lit pond in your home, keep the mosquitoes out and it would be fine, alot of people do it, especially in greenhouses. its very effective way to keep fish and if kept well wont smell.

Edit: dont ruin your foundation

It's been done plenty of times.

Especially with reefs, some guy built a 4,000 gallon concrete tank (He put a big window to view it with). The problem is humidity. The best way is to build an extension onto the side of the house and seal everything to make it damp-proof and you're away.

Humidity isnt that big a problem, just exaust the whole mess outside, I see that you are in Tenn, I'll bet its humid already.

Well there's people who has them, even at their livingroom, my bro is thinking or building one for his turtles btw.

Here are some links I've found:

http://www.thecichlidgallery.com/article_cornertank.htm (not a pond but interesting huge tank)

maybe it depends on how big you want it, if its not too big than maybe humidity wont be a problem, just keep it at a well ventilated room, but not too close to a window (you know, because of algae).

Egads, I never thought about the humidity being a problem. Guess it might. :p

It is an idle thought while waiting on the 55g to cycle, but it would be great for keeping bigger fish, etc. Once my porch gets rebuilt (that has to start first!), I want to put a goldfish pond next to it outdoors. That has been a dream since moving here 10 years ago. Now the porch needs work and I don't want stuff falling in a pond while that's being done. Better to fix it first, then the pond can come later.

If someone lived in a temperate climate, they could have a greenhouse (someone else mentioned this) and not have to worry about heating or humidity as it would be outside their home. I have a big workshop next to my house, but it is not even insulated, so that would be big $$$ to make it useful for fish. Fun to think about all this though.

p.s. yes, it is humid in TN already, but not as bad as normal for June

No more humid than having an indoor pool, in fact you could actually use all the same stuff, possibly even the filter!

What cool links! It is nice to see that there are people that are crazy about their animals and willing to do strange things in their homes to keep them happy.

FYI, I have heard of people using old swimming pool liners for ponds as long as they don't leak.
