Is there a possibility that a Convict and a Jack Dempsey can do it? Well a month 1/2 ago there were Red Devils that supposevely had kids, but they both had this huge lump on their head. Ended up throwing 99.9% of the babies in a 10 gallon, but it seems several got through the cracks. There's a huge difference with the coloration, the ones in the 10 gallon have a couple of dots on their body, and they're a quarter of an inch. While the 3 fish that were left in the tank are a half an inch, and in fact have Silver body with Gray lines. Could someone please inform me with what's going?

But can a Convict and a Jack cross?
Could a Convict and a Red devil cross?
Or could there still be a chance that they're red devils?

The only fish that I had more than one of, were the red devils...
1 Convict
1 Jack dempsey
1 venus

etc

I'm almost 100% sure RDs and convicts can cross, as blood parrots can cross with cons to produce jellybean parrots and blood parrots are supposedly a cross of RD and severum. I'm pretty sure JDs and cons can hybridize as well, and seeing as the RDs are supposedly a pair, this would be the more likely pairing... animals prefer to breed with their own species if at all possible.

You could also have a fish that had a recessive barred Midas gene. Some red devils are the Midas cichlid, which also comes in a barred variety. Check this out:

Barred Midas

and this had nothing to do with any convicts!
