I'm starting a new tank

Hello I'm new here
Thought I'd jump right in with a question for you experienced ones. This is where I am:
Just started a new tank, no fish in yet, still cycling. Got some plants and rocks in though. My question is (probably the first of many) and sorry if this is a dumb question - Assuming I've got fish in and it's all up and running - when I do a 10 or 20% water change should I dechlorinate the new tap water before I pour it in the tank or add the dechlorinator after I pour the bucket in the tank. The reason I ask is because the dechlorinator I have purchased says on the bottle that it instantly dechlorinates the water. Should I add enough dechlorinator as per the water capacity of the tank or just for the few litres in the bucket. Or do I just do nothing and pour it in. I read that the chlorine dissipates as a gas after a few hours anyway.

HI and to the forum prydien .

theres no such thing as a daft question when your starting fish keeping. everyone needs to learn sometime and its better to ask befor rather than later. It is far better to add the dechlorinator to the water whilst still in the bucket as this way, there is no chance that the fish will come into contact with any chlorine. This means that you put enough de-chlorinator in for the ammount of water in the bucket and not the tank.

Welcome to the forum.

Your question is pretty straightforward, so I'll answer it here rather than move the topic to another forum.

ALWAYS dechlorinate the water BEFORE adding it to your tank. Since chlorine kills bacteria, you do not want to risk killing the beneficial bacteria you are trying to cultivate by cycling. In this case, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yep there both right. I always add it to the bucket and use the right amount for the bucket, not the tank.
