Siamese algae eaters and siamese flying foxes are the same thing. They look like a flying fox (I have these) but eat more algae and are colored differently. Ryan might know, He helped me find out which mine were
Well...yes. Siamese Flying Fox is another common name for the Siamensis (Siamese) Algae Eater. But the Siamese Flying Fox and what is conventionally called the Flying Fox are most definitely not the same thing. For this reason I *really* dislike the usage of Siamese Flying Fox when referring to the Siamensis Algae Eater. They are difficult enough to tell apart (especially for a beginner) without the similar name conventions.
The Flying Fox is often confused with the Siamensis Algae Eater, but there is also another very similar fish commonly called the False Siamensis, which is - confusingly enough - neither a Siamensis Algae Eater nor a Flying Fox. These are three fish that are all very similar to the eye if you aren't sure what you're looking for, and fish stores can sell any or all three labelled (or mislabelled, as the case may be) as the true Siamensis Algae Eater. To further complicate matters, the common Chinese Algae Eater (which you do NOT want, IMHO) is also sometimes confused with the true Siamensis, though not nearly as often as the other two.
All this confusion is the reason that the true Siamensis Algea Eater is so difficult to identify, but such a prize to find. In the last few days someone posted a link to a very helpful website that explained the differences between the true SAE and its counterparts. Maybe I can find it...
