I received my Eheim Sludge Extractor that I ordered the other day to try to keep on top of all the poo created my my oscar and plec and I'm really disappointed with it..

The design seems good and is typical eheim build quality and as I was putting it together I was thinking it's going to be great but then it all quickly disappeared when I found how weak at sucking the ruddy thing is.. It only sucks up small particles of crap and it even does that slowly. It doesn't even get near to sucking up the poo.

I'm so disappointed. I think it's because I thought it was going to work so well that it's making the fact that it's crap all the more frustrating. I've checked that it's all been put together properly and batteries in correctly, tried new batteries, checked the impeller but found nothing wrong.

Have I just got a dud one or have other people had the same experience? Needless to say, it's going back on monday. So, does anyone have any suggestions for a good quality, battery powered gravel vac which lets mean clean my 135g, 24" tall tank in between water changes?

*bump*

Surely I'm not the only one who's bought one of these?

I'd love to hear people's suggestions for alternatives. :shout:

I'm affraid to say that not everything with an Eheim badge is not actually made by or developed by Eheim.
this is one of those products.

IMHO
the best power gravel vac on the markets is this one and any decent LFS should stock it of be able to get it for you. it is however around £30 but it is well worth the money.

I know i don't have very messy fish, but my syphon gravel vac is great, just have a good distance between the suction, and the outlet of the pipe and it can clear most of my fishy crap.

Luckily my lfs had one in and I'm glad to say it works like a charm! Thanks! Not quite as convenient as a battery powered one, but it works far better.

Thanks for the advice!

with the fish you have you should be doing 2 x big water changes per week so why not use a gravel cleaner to remove all the crap

this type of toy have always been crap you should has asked before you brought it

If the nitrates are in check and I'm able to clear out the crap mid-week, why do I need 2 water changes per week?

you are correct about it not being as convenient than a battery powered one,
however a battery powered one is never going to have quite the same sucking power.

glad you like the power vac :good:
