I know the symptoms of when a platy is about to drop but i dont think they work for me... i came home today and i saw a platy fry! im pissed because i have 3 pregnant platys and out of the blue one gives birth? she wasnt aggressive, she wasnt hiding, she acted like a normal fish!!!!!! Now i'm scared cause now i dont know when my other 2 platies will drop!!! i saw 3 fry and managed to catch 2 (cant find other). So how do i know when the others are about to drop?? i need to isolate them 12-24 hours before they drop! my killifish probably ate the majority of the fry...

Well I have found that not all fish display the "usual" signs of pregnancy and delivery times!

Your best off just getting the pregnant or suspected pregnant female fish and separating them to another tank or divide your tank with a tank divider...at least that way the fry have a chance to survive.

i dont have another tank... the only thing i can do is put the female in a breeder box soon before her birth. thats why i need to know when.

probably best to leave them be and collect the fry as you find them, otherwise she could become stressed and abort the fry, unless you have a complete seperate tank not a breeder

Well its a large breeder box and when i put the preg fish in i close all lights so its dark and not as stressful. All the fry now other than those 3 were probably eaten by the killifish.

i strongly disagree with the use of breeders as they cause more stress than good IME now i have a seperate tank only a 2.5 gal which i use as a birthing and fry raising tank. i have lost many fry due to breeders, whether it be them being aborted by the mother or being pulled though be the other fish

My breeder box is special... its made so that fish cant be pulled through or anything like that. If i put a plant in the breeder box will the mother be less stress.

platy can drop several fry a few days - a week before the larger main drop so its possible that one of your other two females are about to drop a good size batch, just a thought as this is what happens with one of mine when she close to dropping the lot.

The best way to know when birthing is moments away is when the birth canal is open and seems hollow, if its brown then its poo if not its fry time, this happens upto 1 hour before the drop.
the 2nd best way is when the female starts to hover with her head facing down and her tail up.
the rest of the usual signs are present for upto a week before dropping.

For the record I used large breeders and they work perfect with a 100% survival rate of both mother and fry, its the case of the right timing, waiting for the canal to be open will not result in death of mother or fry. any sooner and aborted fry are possible if not they are too weak to survive

The female that gave birth doesnt look like she still has babies in her but she is very square. will she have more fry soon?(she is very active though just like before).

yes there are more to come, as i said some drop only a few then wait for a few more days to drop the rest

Then should i put her in the breeder box now? otherwise when?

no not yet, take a look at her anal opening if its open and seems like theres nothing in there then she will be ready to place in the trap but when you do turn the tank lights off and increase the temp of the tank by 2 degrees, leave her over night and you should expect some fry by tomorrow night if not the next day, if she aint had them by then let her out and keep checking on the opening, it takes time to get used to knowing when the opening is that of a sign for a close drop and not just poo ready to come out.

2 things. If i dont raise temp. will the drop not occur?(dont want to raise). When the anal is open she would give birth in how much time? right away or a couple hours?

the fry will still come, the raised temp would speed up delivery but if you dont want to this thats ok she will still be fine.
when open she will drop from anytime up to 2 hours
