I’m new to owning fish

Hi i recently got given all the kit for tropical fresh water fish and got given an African Malawi, however I think he may be too big for the tank but I’m not sure how to tell can anyone help.

How big is your tank? We can give suggestions for other fish. As for the African Malawi, it needs at least 30 gallon. Your tank is too small.

They grow to 33cm/13" and need at least 180cm/72" tank length holding 172 gallon as a bare minimum, so yeah a bit big for the tank pictured. Can you get it rehomed?

You can look up fish via this website, some say it's easier to google "fish name seriously fish" than use the search function, but if you have the scientific name it works better.
