Im New Here! My Discus Community Setup

Hi

Im new to this forum but have recently added 2 discus to my established community tank

My setup is as follows

Fluval 180 tank with external filter heated to around 29 degrees

fully planted tank with real plants, bogwood + rocks

6 neon tetra's
5 black widow tetras
2 medium sized golden gouramis
4 small / medium clown loaches
1 pair dwarf gourami's

Ive just added 2 discus, 1 medium size and 1 medium to small

The discus were added 3 days ago the larger one seems very happy but doesnt seem to have eaten much and the smaller one seems to be eating but has been hiding away and has gone a slightly darker than it was when it was purchased

ive been feeding them frozen bloodworms which is what the LFS was feeding them

Any thoughts / comments

they need time to settle in, try tempting them with something different freeze dried brine shrimp is often hard for them to resist try pressing it to the glass 1/2 way down the tank where they can see it or live brine shrimp.
They are shy shoaling fish and do prefer to be in a group in which a bigger tank will be needed as they can become aggressive towards each other you may have to consider this and tankmates need to be more suitable as they get stressed easily. Test your ph, nitrite and amonia and check all is well there and its a good idea to test kh. Also they need plenty of water changes to keep their quality of water good.
it is common for them to darken a little and show stress bars in the first week but it could also be down to unsuitable conditions,tankmates and no mates.

Cant believe how quick replies are here!!

Ill post some pictures of my tank / setup tomorrow evening

Just a couple of comments on the replies ive had so far

The clown loaches seem very happy - can i not re house them when they get bigger??

I was told by my LFS that the Discus get on well with Golden Gouramis and Dwarf gouramis - is this not the case - if not then i will rehouse the Gouramis and get a further 3 discus

Why should i loose the black widow tetras and replace them with neaons? is there a specific reason for this

yea you can rehome of them when there bigger but i ws just letting ya know

Well, i had a gold gourami for a week with my discus and it was mean, it might not be with your discus, but most gouramis are mean if i was you id rehome all the gouramis for discus

Why should i loose the black widow tetras and replace them with neaons? is there a specific reason for this

i used to have black widdows, they were soooo nippy and i had 12 of them they frightened the discus and i just got fed up with my discus sulking, nd getting nipped so i rehomed them, i think neons will be better though, as there not nippy.

to the OP.... take some time now to read up about your fish... and make sure you are removing any food the discus don't eat.

i hope it all goes well... let us know how it goes.
