Hello everyone,

I used to have 5 Congo Tetras. 1 died of an unknown reason a few days after the introduction. About 3 months later, I got 5 more. I added them, and 4 of them were beaten by the other Congo’s. I got one more, and it was beaten to death. Now I have 6. One died of jumping out. One died when I let someone take care of my fish. Now I have 4. One jumped out again. I am not here to discuss how they died. This was all over a 7-8 month period. So now I am left with 3. They are in a 55 with 1 Delhezi Bichir and 2 Corydoras. I am wondering if I should surrender them. I am not buying anymore, because I have spent well over $150 on them, and I am not buying more. Do I rehome?

And I am not a beginner. I know what I am doing. I just want an opinion on this from everyone.

Dang that sucks, I'm sorry about your unlucky tetras. I would rehome them if I were in your situation did you have new stock in mind? Or just thinking about leaving the space? How big is your bircher? I used to have an ornate a couple years ago, I'll see if my brother has pictures still. I'm surprised that guy hasn't ate anything, mine even went after the snails lol

I would suggest the bichir had a role in this problem. I have maintained groups of Congo Tetra three different times over some 40 years. This is a rather timid and somewhat shy fish, in spite of its size, and it is very easily "spooked." Fish jumping out of the tank is almost always due to being suddenly startled, and the bichir swimming below them, and perhaps during the night, would certainly do this. It is also unlikely that Congo Tetra would beat one another up; no disrespect, but that is just not feasible.

As you seem to be getting rid of the bichir, you could acquire a group of Congo again, and I would all but guarantee success, unless of course there is some other issue we are not aware of from the information to date. No mention is made of tank size or aquascape; a 4-foot (120 cm) tank is required for a group of Congo Tetra, and floating plants are needed to shade the overhead light. The fish can be rather timid otherwise.
