Ive just found my best male has the begginings of dropsy :-( What am I doing wrong? My fish keep dying/getting ill my poorly female is still poorly but its not dropsy/internal bacteria my best female died recently suffering dropsy, and now this. Its not all over his body just his stomach, have added some anti internal bacteria meds, im really upset, there isnt much chance of him surviving is there?

As I understand it, Dropsey may be contagious and caused by poor water quality and/or organ failure. I've read that while fish can survive it, they will often have recurring attacks. Have you tried medicated food? On the off chance that it could be contagious, are you using the same items to clean all of your tanks with?

According to what I've read on it, there doesn't seem to be a lot you can do aside from humanely destroying him if it doesn't improve in a couple of days. I'm so sorry! *hugs*

Its usually internal bacteria not usually contagious as far as i know.

The information I have on dropsey is from a book I bought before I got my first tank, so I'm really not an authority, I just thought you might want to know what it said.

I really am so sorry to hear that. Poor sweet little betta guy. :-( Hopefully he'll surprise us all and heal right up.

Do you have some decorations in there so he doesn't feel too out of place?

Actually, dropsy is very contagious when caused by an internal infection (there are times when it is caused by kidney failure not due to bacteria).

If you haven't already, add Epsom salt to the water and treat him with an antibiotic.

Sorry your little guy's going through this.

thanks lisie I was told it wasnt really before, i guess it depends on exact cause? Ive added epsom salts and anti internal bacterial meds, im in the UK so no antibiotics

If its bacterial there may still be a chance, if treated quickly with epsom salt and antibiotics, but if its kidney failure... I hope he gets better, my fingers are crossed for him!

Any updates on his condition today? I've been keeping my fingers crossed for him.
