just today i decided to harvest some plants from outside, ones that do not grow underwater, and planted them in a large unheated bowl of water to see how they do, i took some leafs from a cedar tree and something else that i cannot identify, they are currently about two inches but in summer they grow with a 15" leafless stem, and bush out at the top with a 7" canopy, if they sucseed they will look very nice nice in my fish tank, but i will first have to test them tropical water and with fish, i will post some pics tomorrow

My opinion is that this experiment is a waste of time, though I commend anyone willing to set up an experiment :good:.

At best, the plants you have chosen will be able to survive a period of time - maybe a month or two - before starting to die. And that's if your lucky.

It's easy to find out if plants can grow submerged by doing a google search. Your experiment will take months to complete, and the results can be predicted very easily already.

If you want to try different plants that other people don't have, or just want cheap plants, your best bet would be to find a stream/river in your area and look for plants growing at the side of it. Then test these plants in a heated bowl to see if they can grow in tropical water. This still might not work, but your success rate would be much greater.

So you have a light over the bowl? How often do you change the water in it? Even though it's a pretty useless experiment, if you don't provide light and change the water frequently, it wont even work at all, since other factors would also contribute to the death of the plants.

well, the part of my yard that i got the unknown plant is like a swamp most of the year so that one might survive, as for the bowl, i had a bunch of baby goldfish in it for a month or so, and still maintain the conditions, and if the experiment fails, at least it will give me something nice in my room until the plants die

theres a difference between plants that can tolerate marshy condition for a month or so and plants that can tolerate being fully submerged underwater.
its a mistake often made with a plant called dracaena deremensis.
