Im Back!

hi gang @ TFF, after a short break away from here, im back with avengence.
i do however have a few questions for you guys.....

i have a 240L planted tank with...

9 harlequins
4 gold barbs
2 platies
1 small BN
and about 5 neons

now i want to stock this up a bit, i would love to keep discus but i havent really thought about actually keeping them. obviously i will read up quite a lot but im still a little unsure.

1. do discus like to be in pairs?
2. how do you tell the sex? (can i get away with a ratio of 1:1 ?)
3. can i have 2 in my tank? it is 121 (long) x 41 x 55 (high) cm
4. can i have 2 discus and also have 3 or 4 denisonii's? or will the fast moving barbs scare the discus?
5. i currently feed my fish: frozen and live daphnia, flake, veg pro flake things, bloodworm powder, and tetra prima. will a discus live on these foods? (oh and not to forget the sinking stuff and cucumber for the BN)
6. are there any particular types of discus that are slightly more hardy than others?


any help would be great .

Hi Nick, unless you get an established pair, adding two Discus to a tank will end in disaster, The dominant one will harass and chase the other, which is why Discus should be kept alone or much more ideally in a group of 5 or more.

Also Denissonii barbs aren't ideal tankmates for Discus for the reason you have mentioned

Why don't you try a pair or harem of dwarf cichlids? Like a German Blue Ram, or Borelli's Apistogramma, or a Cockatoo Apistogramma? They would look great in that tank!
