Hi I'm new to keeping fish (about three months now) and everything has been going well until a few weeks ago when the tank water started to go green!? We have tested the water, and all levels seem fine, the fish look healthy, have followed the guidance on water part changes, and with the filter etc. There are some live plants in there also but they seem to be doing ok? Any ideas on what I should do would be very warmly welcomed.

Thanks :)

You'll get more responses if you post this in the begginers froum...not the intros!

hi mate i know that live plants some how create more green algae in the tank, normally dying plants.

Hi again, and thank you very much for the welcomes. I will try moving the post to 'beginners' as advised. I did look on another site, and I think it's caused by too much algae in the water, probably caused by leaving the lights on too much. Fingers crossed, with some water changes, and reducing the light times, I'll be able to see my fish again soon.

Thanks again

Hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

Green water is a symptom of a new tank. It isn't necessarily a bad thing though and won't harm the fish. Water changes will temporarily fix it mainly because you are replacing cloudy water with clear water but it won't really solve the problem. The problem will fix itself over time but may take a few weeks. If you don't want to wait, you might want to look into a UV Sterilizer. They will definitely clear the water in a very short time. Here is a link to a thread I did a while back with photos of the day by day results. You can see that it went from very cloudy to almost crystal clear on 3 days. The first time I used it on another tank was even faster, almost clear in 24 hours. They are somewhat expensive especially if you only have one tank and don't plan to get anymore.
