I have two 10 gallon tanks, one is just horribly green...i can barely see the fish, not even able to see the other side of the tank.
the water is soo green, but there isn't any algae any where..just green water
i have 10guppies and a bristle nose pleco in there, and i really want to just throw it all out the window!!!!
i've tried ev erything!
i put towels around the tank for 50hours not letting any light in, that didn't work a bit.
then i bought these HAGEN green-X algea get ridder things those didn't seem to help either at all.
I do water changes as well! IT"S SO FRUSTERATING!!!!!!!!!!!!
please tell me what i can do!!!!
or buy something at least!!!
just nothing to expensive!
i just don't want to look at this tank anymore!!!!

I don't know too much about it, but I'm pretty sure UV sterilisers work well.

ok just keep doing what uve been doing but on a larger scale so larger water changes and long balck out periods so no natural light or light from your lighting system

Your tank is overstocked :/

Move the plec to another tank (if you can)

And then just reduce feeding for a while, and do partial water changes every 3 days, well,
It's only a ten gallon, so its not that much!

Make sure the tank isnt in direct sunlight, and just wait

why dont you do a 80% water change, dont let the light get to it, and remove the fish for a few days. leave the filter running for the few days. if this doesnt work then i would start a new cycle, do a 100% water change, clean the tank out, fill the tank back up and cycle it for about 2/4 weeks.

I've heard Diatom filters are good for this, they wor out at around £40 (i think around $60?) Can get them easily on ebay :)

Black outs are most effective if you have plenty of plants to take from the algae once the black out is over.

If you are really despairing, buy a UV steriliser and your water will be crystal clear in days. You won`t have got to the root of the problem, but you won`t be giving up on the hobby either.

Dave.

stick one of these in the tank and in a few days it will be crystal clear, i had the same as you in my 40 odd gallon tank and the little 9 watt one cleared it up in 4 days, with yours only being 10 gallons i would think it would clear up a bit quicker.

here's some before and after pics

I wish I could *create* green water for my daphnia! Adding nutrients just seems to create other non-suspended algaes.

AP algae destroyer advanced gets rid of it and doesn't hurt the fish or plants. I used it at 1/2 dose and it worked pretty fast. :good:

Algae killers will work but they may not help the root of the problem in which case the algae may re-appear.

According to:

http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/algae.htm

High ammonia levels are a common cause of this algae, so the plec (which is a messy messy fish!) may be partly to blame as it will produce significant amounts of waste which could cause ammonia to be present in the tank at levels beyond those which the filter can cope with.
