Guys,

My first platy has had 3 fry so far, I have managed to save one inna net as I do not have another tank set up yet. I only have a 10gal tank and am eventualy going to set one up to keep the fry but to late for this lot.

Q: how many fry do they normally have, im like an expectant father sitting by my tank waiting to see if I can save anymore, however, I have got my net with the one fry in it and tied strin from the handle to a chair to stop in dropping into the water and put another net over the top. I so so hope I can manage to keep this little guy and watch him grow.

Q: how quick do they grow, feedeing then Liquifry.

This is so exciting.

hipee for the platy mum, although dad and the others are following her all over the place waiting for diner.

Depends if it's her first batch not always alot, they can have up to 40 of them i think, crushed flakes, and baby brime strimp, keep an eye on water quality as that liquidfry messes the water up.Congrats.

We had a member on here who got 83 in one batch (!), but I've never seen more than about 15 from mine.

How quickly they grow depends. My 4-month-old fry are now c. 3-4 cms I think (though haven't measured) and can be easily sexed, my 3-months might be 2-3 cms and some can be sexed, my 2-month about 1.5 cms and not yet sexable.

edit: Forgot to say- Congratulations!!!

I have one fry left in the net, the others went the normal way, however, now the female has had her fry one of the males just won't stop following her all around tank and being a pest, is this normal?

That is normal behavior for platys, but unless you have enough females to go around the males can over-harrass the females, how many female and male platys do you have? If you set up another tank for fry you need to cycle it otherwise the fry won't last long, the easiest way is to buy a new filter and run it alongside your current tank filter in your tank for at least a week and then move it to the fry tank on the same day you put the fry in.

Hi

Congrats!

just wondered if you might want to think about buying a 'breeding net', you can get them for a couple of pound generally from any aquarium place. They are still not ideal but a little more permenant then your fish net, they just secure on the side of your tank and they float inside...you should be able to keep your little fry in there until its grown enough to be let out into the big wide world, or until you find a better solution, ie another tank.

ps, as has already been said...you need to be thinking about the long term and how many babies you might be expecting over the next few months, plus you need to have more females then males but that might mean more babies

x

Thanks for the advise and in answer to your q's I have 4 females and 2 males

that should be a fine ratio then :) to help the females a little bit more try and make sure that you have a lot of places to hide, plus imho a planted tank looks nicer....(if you havent already) try and get a few more plants in, real or artifical....plus if you have a more heavily planted tank you'll find you some babies survive anyway...unless u particualy want (and have plans) to raise all of your fry then this is probably the best way to go...

Although you may have caught only one fry, you should check in the gravel, seeing as how she could have had some more and you might not have noticed. When my molly had her fry, I only found three at first, two in the plants and one hiding in the gravel looking like he was dead :X but I moved the gravel and he just shot out like a bullet and swam away from my hand. Then over the next couple of days, my sister found 4 more fry, either swimming, hiding in the plants, or in the gravel. Congrats on the fry!
