I went into a tropical fish store the other day and was talking to the owner about some things. He told me Elodea and Apple Snails are illegal? Is this true? He was getting on my nerves and I just wanted to get out of there so I never did ask him why altho I really wish I had now.. Drat..
Has anyone ever heard this? I am setting up my new tank and I was hoping to plant some Elodea in it.

p.s. I live in USA

i've never ever heard of this before, and i severely doubt that it's true, i would imagine almost every LFS in the country sells Elodea

I got the feeling he was just saying this to me cuz he didn't carry them... I called a couple other places that didn't have them but they never said anything about them being illegal. And one lady even said they sometimes carry elodea she just didn't have any at the moment... I wonder if he just made that up just cuz he didn't have it.. You hsould have heard the things he said to me about fishless cycling! He was quite rude!

the elodea might be, i know that hygrophilia polysperma is as it is considered a weed over there as it grows so fast and the same could apply to elodea but i highly doubt it.

some plants are illegal in some states because they can become a pest if they get into local waterways. Elodia is a tough plant that grows rapidly and survives in a variety of water qualities. Therefore it could be considered a pest species and as such would be illegal in that state. Check with your local Park & Game (Wildlife) office and ask them. They might have brochures telling you what is illegal in your state.

Apple snails aren't normally illegal but again check with Park & Game.

Thanx so much! I just called and it is NOT illegal! I knew he was lying! I will never be going back there! They said you are allowed to have it in your aquarium but not it ponds and if it dies I am to throw it away in the garbage but I am allowed to purchase it for aquarium use!

Thanx for the replies...

p.s. I just called another store and he carries the Elodea. It is a bit of a drive but it is worth it... OK I am done obsessing on this. LOL

your lucky you can keep it in your tank. We aren't allowed to have it at all in Western Australia. We have Hydrilla instead. It looks the same, grows the same but has a different name :)

If you want some elodea hen ask in the buy sell &swap section, loads is going all the time, i have jst chucked a load although i am in uk.

I'd like to know what else this guy said to you! lol Got me all curious what wonderful words of wisdom he said to you about fishless cycling heh.

Ok.. no exaggeration.. When I asked him about the fishless cycling he:

Gave me a really nasty look, then said, "Where did you learn that?! You're going to kill your fish. (even tho I explained it was fishLESS cycling) then he said "just put the fish in there and in a about a week it will be OK"

Mind you this is also the same guy that told me a few days earlier that I can put any plant in with my goldfish and that he hasn't had a problem with them eating them..

I have since found a different fish store that I am going to. They are a drive but I really like the store and the guy seems very knowledgeable and helpful...
