Hi all

Over the last couple of days my male neon blue dwarf gourami (kept in pairs) has seemed to take a turn for the worse. I first notice a small patch of discoloured scales below his upper fin a few days ago. Tonight he has gone black all round his mouth and on the edge of his body at the top and bottom running from his mouth half way up his body.

I am a "newbie" fishkeeper so have no experience in diagnosing ailments so I would be grateful if anyone could pass on any advice on what it could be and any appropriate treatments if available.

Many thanks in advance.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Need to look at water stats first as black patches can be ammonia burns that are healing.

That blackness... is it stringy or fuzzy? Might be a fungal infection.

The discoloration could occur due to stress, though I would think that if it were related it would more likely occur throughout its entire body.

I know you have not gotten very helpful answers, but could you check in with more info if the fish is still alive?
