I recently purchased a cichlid for my new 55 gallon tank, and after talking with one of the employees (very knowlegable) asked him what cichilds could go in a community tank. He pointed out that very few were suited for that, and they were all dwarf cichlids. He showed me a few, one that had a scientific name that started with an A. anyway, I was looking in another tank and my mother (who was also there) pointed out one she likes.

The employee said that it was the type of cichlid he was talking about earlier. The tank we were looking at had a large gourami, an australian rainbow, jack damsy, and the cichlid i purchased. When I got home, I noticed he looked very much like a green terror. I'm very worried now for my other fish.

Are there any type of cichlids that look a LOT like a green terror, but are peaceful? I looked at the other green terrors they had the next day, and all of them had a white strip on the top of thier fin, not orange like mine. It has wavy blue irredecent lines hear its mouth and irredecent dots on it's body, blue lips, 2 black spots in the middle on one side, and horizontal black stripes on it's head going down to it's back. it's only about 3". and hasent shown any real aggessive behavior, except at feeding time when he pushed others out of the way, and the eel incident.

Yes, I tried to put a eel in the tank, and needless to say, he had to be taken out shortly after. That little devel started attacking it the min. I put it in the tank. However with all the other fish, hes very good. He even swims along side the large blue spotted gourami I have in there.

It's in with one 5" blue-spot gourami, 6 congo tetras, and 4 albino tiger barbs. It's top fin is also really orange, not red...it just looks that way in the picture.

Thanks!

I've been told this could be a green terror, or possibly a blue acara/

Cant be a jewel. Jewels dont have the red on their dorsal fin. I cant see one in the pic, but he doesnt apper to have a black line through his eye, which makes me think, sorry, he IS a green terror. Acaras and Rams both have a line through their eyes.

You can't tell from the picture, but he does have vertical stripes on his body, one very cloe to his eye, running down. Also, the stripe is orange, not red. (another camera mistake)

I would need a better pic. if he DOES have vertical lines then he is most likely a Blue Acara. Orange or red doesnt really make a difference.

At a glance of the picture I thought "awww... a baby Green Terror"

After reading the original post and responses, I looked at more pics and looked closer at the pic you posted... and I still think it is a Green Terror.

I've read a lot of profiles about Green Terrors and have heard many peoples experiences. I've personally raised several of them at different times and have loved them. Male GTs tend to clash hard with other male GTs but I haven't had too many issues with them being overly aggressive towards other fish, especially as juvenals. Now I'm not saying he is going to be a peaceful lil sweetheart... but I'm sharing an experience that differs from the norm. Naturally if they are over crowded or otherwise unhappy, they definitely have the ability to tear up their tank mates.

I bought a Apisto a while back and had to go look for info and I think I ran across one that looks like this but I'm not sure maybe you could Google Apisto and see there are a bunch of fish that fall under that so good luck I looked for a couple days to find mine.

looks exactly like the terror in that pic here's a quick overveiw

Overview:

Often confused with The Blue Acara the Green terror is more aggressive and has a more pronounced "bump" on the forehead when mature. Typical of most large cichlids the terror are noted for their aggression and should only be kept with fish that can fend for themselves

Holy cow that pics is hard to see...I resized and darkened it.
It looks very much like my GT .but your pics has an extra black splotch on the side.Even in the other pics provided the GT does not have the extra black splotch.
Body shape and shape of the head isn't exactly correct either.

It, I am almost positive, a GT. The black spot just looks like it is kinda broken into 2 spots...could just be a genetic variable? I dont think it means anything. Its gotta be a GT.

Funny. Not saying I disagree, esp. because I'm not good at "name this fish." But your fish seems to ressemble more than one type. I am not saying this is the fish I think it is, I'm only saying there are similarities.
It is an apistogramma hippolytae.
