Long story short ...

A few days ago I took the two grands with me to pick up the corner tanks at the not so LFS. While there as I talked with people the grands peppered me with wants. Mainly we want to pick out fish to take back. A tank was cycled and ready for denizons so I said OK you can each pick two. They did. I was still busy so I gave them my CC and told them to go ahead and pay. They did.

Upon reaching home I realized they did not get a receipt. Not a biggy, EXCEPT, I have no idea what these creatures are

First pair:

Second like this:

One of the above has a yellow streak going down its back, the second does not.

I am not trying to be lazy with my research and have done some browsing without success. Two grands and a wounded wife seem to be taking up my time and I am not going to be able to realy dive into a book until the two little urchins return home tomorrow.

There is also a BN Pleco, full grown, and a bllod parrot in the tank, (This is Linda's dream fish and was a Valentine gift).

1st one looks like a Sahyadria denisonii ( Rose line shark, Denison barb ) the 2nd looks like rainbow fish... too much reflection for me to identify further

A picture from the side without that reflection would help more to determine the correct rainbow fish species.
And yes, as already stated, the first one is a Denison barb.

I agree with the above...they both ought to be in groups though 😬

OK --- I have read on these two species.

The Roseline sharks apparently get to be 6 inches and need a group of six, Fifty-Five Gallons for the first and 5 gallon each additional. That amounts to a 75 or 90. Another tank that size is simply not going to happen in the fish room, and I already have two tanks in the bedroom and two in the living room. I do have a 55 available and can shoehorn it into the fish room, but prefer not too because I want to use it during the summer in the pond house. I love these fish but will apparently need to call the not so LFS about a return.

The Lake Kutubu rainbowfish is apparently a Turquoise Rainbow Fish. Again, it appears I need to keep six and the tank needs to be 55 gallons. Same quandary as above.

Am I correct in my assessment?

If so I have learned a great if uncomfortable lesson.

not going to argue with your research, I'll only say I get away with less tank than that, with 5 denison's in a 55, along with all my Hillsteams

I think you can stock to higher levels than I can because of your plants (?). Perhaps I am wrong.

We are transitioning to live plants but have a long way to go I think before we actually get any significant help from the. At current time I prefer understock because I think it forgives my many mistakes to some degree. More experience will bring higher stock levels. Not crawling anymore but still toddling. At least I like to believe.

It isn’t really an issue of filtration; it’s an issue of space and activity levels. Both of these species are very active. I’ve kept both in a 55 gallon and they did “ok”. The kutubus even spawned a few times. But after keeping rainbows in a 150 gallon and seeing how much more active and interesting they were, I don’t think I would keep them in a 55 again. Same with dennies. They have that torpedo shape for a reason! Maybe a 55 with a strong current would make them happy.

Kutubu rainbows have some of the coolest social behaviors I’ve ever seen in my fish. They really communicate with color flashing. I never really figured out the language but It’s really fun to watch them.

I swear my rainbows get the 'zoomies' like a dog would 😅 ordinarily I'd be inclined to think they were flashing with an irritation or contamination in the water if I saw it from any other fish, but when rainbows get excited they really do make use of all the space available to them and they're so fun to watch

Kutubus would do okay in a 4 foot tank, ideally one with front to back room. Height would be optional. They aren't high speed swimmers and they don't get huge. I find them very beautiful, but they very often seem to have tb lesions, even in stores. Their price has dropped radically, but so has their lifespan. It really is a shame, because they are under pressure in the wild, but often diseased from the farms.

I've never kept Denison barbs, because the first time I saw them, they were a new fish that had arrived close to adult size. I looked at that and figured with a torpedo shape, silvery scales and their overall demeanour, this fish was going to want to swim fast and far. They are incredibly beautiful fish, and are tempting, but I couldn't keep them right. As well, and I don't know if this has changed, they are like tiny threadfin rainbows, or clown killies in the trade - most wholesalers only receive males from the farms. So if you keep shoals, you don't get to see normal shoaling behaviour. From a fish watcher's point of view, they can be a bust. It isn't good for fish breeders, either...

my Denisions are comfortable enough, that I get to watch nuptial dancing regularly in my highly flowing Hillstream 55 gallon tank, and while active, aren't swimming from end to end like they are confined in too small a space...
