Hi

My friend is getting rid of his tank and fishes. This is last 2 fishes he needed to sell/give away, so I ended up with them but have no clue what are they he said that this is a pair of dwarf chihilds some sort of apistogama after some searches I found it might be an borellii but cannot be sure as never seen one before. Could you help me with identification please as I would like to take good care of them.

here are pics - sorry about the quality of them but these fishes are really shy and pics are best I could do now.

Regards

thx

the top pic is the only one I downloaded, they are massive images and take a while to get with dial-up internet :)
the cichlid in the top picture looks like Nannacara anomala, a small peaceful cichlid that does well in most community tanks with other peaceful fish.

thx i thought that diap-up is dead? :)

not around here it isn't. Our previous governments sold out the telecommunication company they owned and we never got decent cables installed. We are still using old copper wires that were put underground back in the 50s. Now our new government has promised to get fibre optic cables set up but it will be about 8 years before we get it. It's bloody rediculous and really does suck. And if you can get broad band here, it runs slowly, costs a fortune and you don't get to download much at all. And when you go over your download limit, you get slugged an arm and a leg for the excess data. Greedy damn tel-cos (telephone companies).

Colin, that kinda sucks. I have Broadband. Shoot, those pics were up and resized in about 10 secs! Hmm, they almost look a relative to Kribensis. Im gonna go with Colin since he actually gave a name for it! Pretty fish though.

I have Kribs in my tank with them they do not like each other, maybe because Kribs just spawned - but it seems strange as there are no youngsters but they still aggressively defending theirs territory. They have lay eggs on night between last Thursday/Friday so I have expected youngsters to appear Sunday/Monday - eggs have disappeared but no youngsters - is there time between they hatch and are free swimming?

p.s that's no good with your dial-up - home they make this better soon - btw - cannot you get satellite in Australia?

I see a family resemblence in them. They are not closely related. The eggs probably hatched and teh parents probably moved the fry. Or the parents ate them.

I think the parents ate them as this is 1st time for this pair :(

Kribensis eggs take a few days to hatch and then the fry will spend another few days using up their yolk sack. After that they become free swimming. Depending on temperature, it can take a week or so before you see the fry moving around. If the parents are still guarding an area, they probably still have them.

Unless the tank is more than 3ft long, you will have to keep an eye on the kribensis and make sure they don't attack the other cichlids (Nannacaras). If they haven't caused any problems yet, they probably won't. But keep an eye on them anyway.

We can get satellite dishes that go out the back. They cost around $10,000 and only work on clear days. Useless in winter when it is cloudy or raining.

So i underestand that there is still hope about Kribensis fry, thats good
Kribs do not attack Nannacaras so mutch now as they setteled their territory in other end of the tank in coconut shell so it looks like it will be ok :)

10k that's expensive - do you have any relatives autside au? they might be able to get you satellite tv with broadband in their country and get it over to yours, I believe it should work but i`m not expert.

most places charge about $20 a month for dial-up here. I was lucky and got connected with a company some years ago and managed to get unlimited dial-up for $15 a month. It's slow but not too expensive :)
