hi my female platty had 32 babies yesterday and i found five of them inside my internal filter i have them in a breeder net at the moment i want to let the free in my small tank which is heated and was wondering if anyone has any ideas how i can prevent the going up the filter would having just an airstone be enough margaret

What type of filter do you have?

If it's a normal power filter, then you could probably get some nylon netting and rubberband it to the intake tube to keep them from getting them sucked in.

Is the filter in a fry rearing tank or in a normal tank?

Internal filters aren't good with fry because the fry end up being curious ( i.e. stupid) and wander into the filter. A HOB filter works much better. I have never had any fry get sucked up into any of my power filters. Filters are definately a necessity in fry tanks. Fry are much more sensitive to water conditions than adults are and can becomed stressed and die much easier.

Of course, you could just get a sponge filter for biological filtration and do daily water changes. That'll keep currents down and there's no chance of killing the fry.

For my 10 gallon fry tank we wrapped the filter outlet in fish netting, then tied it with string. The fry still get plenty of O2 and can even nibble on the debris sucked to the filter and not be stuck themselves.
