Hi,Well the idea of having discus stopped due to having a fish house being built. The fish house is 9ft by 8ft.In the middle row i would like a 4ft tank and would like 1 big fishy in there,The tank will be 4ft long, and 12inch back,Possibly 15inch back depending on price of tank.Would rather go for 1 big fish or even a pair.I dont mind.Cheers,Ben.

Wider tanks give you much more options, try and get it as wide as possible if you havn't already got a tank.
If you go for 12" wide then your options are limited to big fish, as they would lack the room to turn.

Have you any idea which you are going for, 12" or 15" (or bigger gives alot more options)

For a pair though, I would suggest:
JD's
Possibly texas
Salvini
There are smaller fish but I have suggested the biggest I would stock in a 12" wide tank.

For a single fish I would think anything in the 8-10" range (which you may be able to have a pair of) should be fine.

If price is the issue, look around eBay, local papers etc. You will be surprised what you can find, a fortnight ago I got a 90G tank, stand, heaters, lights, sump - the whole works for £70.

obviously it would depend on the final dimensions (L,W,H) to what would work best, but there would be plenty of choice for american cichlids or other large species.
heres a few for you to research. (there are a few that would ideally require a 5foot tank or larger but there listed to show you what could work)

Single Cichlids

Oscar
Jack Dempsey
Green Terror
Texas Cichlid
Midas Cichlid
Red Devil
Jaguar Cichlid
Emerald Cichlid

Pair of Cichlids

Severum
Nicaraguence
Geophagus

Others

Giant Gourami

Giant Gourami get too big for a 4' tank, they can exceed 2' in length. Even if the tank was 15" wide I would also rule out the Oscar, Jaguar and Midas, along with possibly the RD depending on your own judgement.

OSCAR EVERYTIME MATE :shout:

not just a fish,.............. a family pet

ok, wasn't sure on the gourami, i did say though that it depended on the final dimensions for the others,

My way of thinking is tp pick a fish that you like and then find a tank suitable,

Discus are still an option. Get a good quality known pair from a good lfs. Good quality Discus young will always sell. They get up to 8 inch-quite big :good:

i'd go with 12-14 wild angels in a heavily planted tank with a few bottom dwellers.
