Ideal Neolamprologus Multifasciatus Tank Size?

Hello,

I know a 10 gallon will suffice, but I was wondering what would be ideal? I am looking into getting a species tank and these guys seem very entertaining. I was hoping to get a colony going. Would 1 male 3 females be best to start with then use their offspring to create the colony? Or would a better plan be to get 2 males and 6 females and start it that way.
