can anyone tell me the level of salt needed in a ten gallon tank holding 2 mollies and 3 fry? I want to take a sample of water to the lfs and want to be informed about the ideal levels for them. Also can I take media from a friends salt water tank to seed my cycling tank with the beneficial bacteria thank you

I know that I should have cycled with out the fish first but they are stuck in that tank as the LFS wont hold them for me.
thanks again

I use one teaspoon of Aquarium Salt per 5 gallons in my tanks.

It is best to take some water out and mix the salt into it then slowly pour it back into the tank after it has dissolved.

Please keep in mind that if you have a Planted Aquarium or Snails salt is not friendly towards them.

mollies don't require salt, i have many of them atm and they are fine.

Mollies don't need salt, but for many people it's much easier to look after them with it. If your look healthy and are breeding you probably don't need it.

There is a pinned topic on the ideal salt levels : http://www.fishforums.net/content/Common-L...lies-Need-Salt/.

I'm afraid that will be doing no good to your mollies, that is an very low level of salt, and it sounds like it's the wrong type of salt too. It sound like your using regular 'aquarium salt' people use for freshwater tanks, which is just sodium chloride. Marine aquarium salt is what helps, and in higher concentrations :).
