Idea For A Background Good Or Bad

ive been looking at 3d back grounds for my fluval 240 i also want it on the sides but they look a bit pricey and ive been trying to think of cheaper alternatives. Would i be able to paint the outside of the tank black.

Next get some kind of thin plastic (not sure whats safe for inside the aquarium)cut to size then cover that in a thin coat of aquarium silicone.

Then pour fine black gravel over that shake off the excess then attach these to the inside of the tank with aquarium silicone or would this be to much strain on the tank???

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Getting it to look nice might be a different matter, but there's no reason it wouldn't work in principle.
