sorry i dont have a pic but i will describe it as best i can!

its about 10cm long..maybe bigger, looks like a zebra cichlid but has the most gorgeous blue tinge/shine to its entire body and fins (over the black/white stripes) it has a kind of 'hump' on its head
have looked at the pics of zebra cichlids but it just doesnt look like any of them? any idea what it could be?

Hi spishkey thanks for joining my site

and thank you for accepting me on your site :) so sorry to hear about your turtle, im having probs with my oldest female, shes got something wrong with her shell (at the sides between the plastron and carapice, but cant find a vet who specialises in turts to treat her, so am frantically searching online for help!!

that pic looks just like it except mine has a kind of hump head?? maybe its a deformaty ?

edit - ah ha its a frontosa most definatly!! many thanks!!! now i can do some research on them. am hoping to hunt down some more locally to make a group or at least a pair if they go! (once this one has recovered, he was in with a pair of jewel cichlids and was beat up badly when he arrived)

have you seen the second pic thats got a hump.

its ok thankyou spishkey these things happen im affraid.

with yours does the shell feel a bit soft and have a clear red liquid coming from it at all not loads just like weeping ?

no it looks like the shell has been scrapped and its taken on a pink colour in patches (is usually yellow) she has been hiding for weeks but managed to catch here the other day and saw it. shes been spending so much time in the pond ive not seen her bask for a long time :(

you might have to make her bask for a while let her totally dry out and keep an eye on her shell we had this we thought she was shedding at first but it started weeping clear red watery stuff we looked it up and it was shell rot for just like yours spending too much time in the water apparently not giving the shell chance to dryout and harden again then it starts to get an infection and the water quilty just changes dramatically we were changing everyday 50% and made her dryout and it cleared up in a couple of weeks

sorry we have totally gone off the subject here lol

so we have...oops!
so should i dry dock her for a while? trying to find her again shoud be fun! might bring her inside into a tank for a while, can monitor things a lot easier then
it almost looks as if shes been dragging herself against something sharp and its worn away parts on the underneath?

yeah dry dock her for about 2/3 hours still let her have a soak just pour water over her now and then and get some meds for her i cant remember the name of it off hand i will get it for you though and if you cant find any in belgium i will get some and send it you if needs be but i cant do that untill wednesday (i get paid then)

is she getting fat behind the legs ?

mean while have a look at this

i dont want to alarm you because it might not be shell rot just keep an eye out for a few days. if she is getting fat she might have eggs they seem to change alot in personality get abit mardi (hissing and mouth opening at you) they also get a bit frantic sometimes thrash about in the water and knock themselves about looking for somewhere to lay i made a nesting pen for mine 50% good topsoil or compost and 50% sand mixture about 8 inch deep in a big old gerbil cage (well not a cage a plastic home) you could use a big platic store box with a basking lamp over it about 8 inches higher than the turtles shell but make sure she has been in the water before she goes into the nesting area as she needs water to soften the ground up and dig (she will basically wee alot on it lol) if you dont provide a nesting area they become eggbound and then major problems can happen as the eggs get soft and break inside her and that is very dangerous for them often leads to death

i really dont want to scare you im just posting to yopu possibilties why her shell is becoming marked and scratched

she has a large 'land' area around the pond where she could lay if needs be, but since ive had her (6 months?) and for the 9 years her previous owner had her, she has never laid?
im gonna sit out and try and catch her today to bring her indoors for a few days and see how shes acting. thank for ther help info and link :)
