So my beautiful 20 gallon long tank has ick. i have a sponge filter running. do i need to trash it and get a new one? im so upset! i havent had an ick issue in many years and now boom!
i have tank the decor out and have been soaking in extremely hot salt water for 3 days now. are they safe?

Ich can be eradicated by turning the tank temperature up to 86f/30c and leaving it at this temperature for 2 weeks. You do not need to treat the decor separately, nor discard the sponge filter.

thank you. i got a new heater and have it at 84 i have an albino dojo loach and i think she isnt able to stand very high temps. is that correct?

I've not kept dojo loaches but when others have asked about heat treatment on specific species there were no cautions about loaches. I think all tropical and temperate fish can tolerate the heat treatment as it is short term. After two weeks (or one week after spots have disappeared), the temperature can be returned to their preferred range. Hope that helps.

The water temperature has to be 86F (30C) otherwise it won't kill the parasites.
