I have fish problems.

We bought my 4 year old son a fish tank for his room about 2 weeks ago, and he is super in love with it, and the fish.

Well, long story short, we have been battling ICK for the past week or so, it has finally claimed its victim (poor stripy fish) and For some reason Poor frogy bit the dust too, both this morning

To combat the ick i have been changing out 50% of the tank water every day and using that jungle brand ick guard, plus adding a few Tsp. of salt to the tank.

Well, now that the fish has died, do I still need to treat the water? we have a yellow fish with a few tiny spots on his tail, but nothing to bad. I guess ICK is always present in a tank, and stressed fish get it, so should I stop stressing my fish by changing the tank all the time or keep treating the ick? my online research says that I need to treat 14 days past when the spots go away to fully get rid of it.

Someone please tell me they know what to do.

I would keep treating around 2 weeks after to make sure that can catch up with the 2 week life cycle which Ich generally has. The salt will also definately help well worth using every water change as its a natural steriliser, and should help keep background levels of most parasites and harmful bacterium at low levels in your tank. Most fish shops use salt on their fish systems once a week or on a regular basis for this reason.

just make sure that all tank mates will tolerate the salt, delicate fish like cardinals and rummey nose can suffer.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure what would cause more stress for the fish. :good:

Don't get me wrong treating the fish for extra time can cause stress but it will be more stress full if the disease came back in the near future. Unfortunatley
any treatment is stressful when used against disease, but usualy as the treatment works it uses oxygen in the tank and it this which 9/10 effects the fish unless over dosed.

there are a number of treatments which rely on natural ingrediants which can help in the future, but there are not any i could recommend for parasites

glad i could help, lets know how you get on

Hi PrairieMom :)

If your tank is only two weeks old, I suspect you might have more problems than just ich. If you haven't started your tank as a "clone" off another tank, you will want to read up on the cycling process and ask some questions in the beginners section. It's a little involved, but well worthwhile to go to the trouble to get this great family hobby off to a good start. Good luck to you.

I'll move your thread over there.
