It's the 2nd day of treatment with Quick Cure and the white spots have disappeared from all the fish. The carbon was removed from the filter, the temp is 80F and I've added small amounts of salt until the recommended dosage was reached.

I know I'm not supposed to stop the treatment now, but what is the standard length of treatment? The instructions say to treat for just 2 days and to do a 25% water change on the 3rd day if extended treatment is required.

Also, I was wondering if my Clown Pleco will suffer any adverse effects and possibly die as a result of the chemical and thermal treatment.

Am I doing the right things so far? -_-

I would remove the salt as the plec can't tolerate it , turn temp up to 30.

It's now the 6th day of treatment and the white spots are back. Not only that, the goldie that started the outbreak now has tail fins that are failing apart and ragged.

What should be done now????? :(

this is what i did within a week-2 weeks everything was fine

turned temp right up to about 80
25% water changes everynight
and added about 1/2 reccomened meds
NO salt if u have a plec

Andrew, i've also heard from several sources that while treating for ick it is good cover the tank so light does not get in. ick is supposed to reproduce at a higher rate with strong light.

What fish has the finrot.

Goldfish, if so some salt baths about three times a day you don't want to be adding another med.

Should I remove the goldie form the others to do the salt bath? How much salt and for how long? Will this cure the fin rot? :(

Get a container or bucket add one tablespoon of salt to a gallon of water, leave the fish for 10minutes till he get used to the salt, then gradually leave him in the salt bath for 30 minutes, he might act weird at first if he dosn't settle down and starts flipping over remove him from the salt bath, just remove the water from the tank as it will be the same temp, salt baths are good for finrot how bad is it.

too much salt can wreck the tails. but saying that your fish are open to secondary infections now.
you should either be using meds or salt and not both together.
the natural way is to use the salt at .3% for two weeks. My own plecs survived this treatment but not everyone wants to do this so i would suggest setting up a rubbermaid for a couple of weeks and placing the plec in it with a heater and filter.

ick meds can work but you need to use them solidly for at least a week or three days after the last spot has gone.

i recently found out that the free swimming stage doesnt have eyes so it doesnt matter whether you cover the tank or not. what you must do is turn of the over head light for the treatment and remove any carbon or zeolite.

another way is to whack the temp up to 86f and kill them that way, they hate the heat but i dont know if this actually works, maybe some one can help more with that.

I've placed the gold fish in a seperate container and added salt. The temp is around 80F and he has been in it for about 30 min. The fin rot became noticable this morning. It's on one side and looks bad :/

The salt baths should help them , good luck, also when a second infection sets in the odds go down, so you will have to keep doing the salt baths for the fish to recover.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

He's back with his friends not and looks happy.

I'll keep up the salt baths and continue to leave the tank light off.

Andrew. :fish:
