just discovered an outbreak of ich - first one in at least 10 years!! I've not added anything to the tank, other than usual water changes, plant ferts etc, so not sure how it's been introduced, but anyway...

As it's one of my clown loaches that's infected (at the mo) I really want to try and treat it without meds, if possible. I came across this method

have ran across two methods of dealing with this critter. The first method was relayed to me by a good friend and fellow Hobbyist, which I have used with scaleless species like my eels and knife fish, it works incredibly well. If you do not have access to medications, or a mixed tank of scaled and scaleless fish, give this one a shot.

• Simply ring your tank in black plastic, or heavy blanket, absolutely no light must enter the tank for 24-48 hours ( I recommend 36-48 ) that the Ich simply dies off. Like I stated, I have yet tried this method, but on my next outbreak I will certainly give it a shot.
• After 48 hours remove the covering, resume feeding as normal, wait 5 days then repeat the above step again. By the end of this second treatment you are all done.
• NOTE: During the 24-48 hours that the tank is covered, ensure that the tank lights are off and absolutely NO peeking, or feeding of the tank, absolutely no light must enter the tank! If any, even the smallest amount of light does make it in to the tank, remove the cover, wait a couple of days and start all over again. Also if you inject CO2 into your tank for the live plants, turn it off during this period of darkness. If you do keep live plants, slight browning of leave edges may occur, simply prune this away.

I've also heard raising the temp for a few days helps also. I were to combine the 2 methods would I be ok?
anyone tried this?
does it work?
if not, want meds would you recommend for use with loaches?

I wouldn't risk it with clown loaches whitespot can soon kill a fish.
Only had whitespot once in my tank and use interpet med.

The Ich parasite does not need light at all to reproduce, it feeds on fish, therefore blocking out light will not suffice as a treatment at all.

Some strains of the parasite can be wiped out at 90 degrees F, though some won't, and by raising the temperature you are increasing the speed of the parasite's life cycle and will increase the rate the parasite spreads without other treatments.

Best thing to do is to get a whitespot treatment, remove any carbon (if you use it) and keep treating until you have seen no spots for at least 4-5 days.
