Well I know you guys get a ton of posts on Ich, and people asking what they should do. I have looked on the boards, and have found nothing regarding my question.

I just lost 3 of my Platies to Ich, and the fourth one is covered still toughing it out. :-( I have taken out the carbon filter, and raised the temp to 79 degrees. I also have been treating the tank with Quick Cure too for about 5 days now. The last one only seems to be getting worse, and she is starting to get fin rot. The water readings are fine and relatively normal, and I really dont know why it wont go away. I am trying everything that I can to treat the last fish, but I feel she will probably die within the next couple of days.

My question is that I was wondering if the water is too overly infected to introduce any new fish in the next week. Will doing a 100% water change, and cleaning the gravel, get rid of the ones that fall off in a dormant state. I dont want this to happen again with any new fish, any help????

I'm going through the same at the moment.... i've only got 5 little fish left in the tank now. If they dont survive i'm going to totally clear the tank out and cycle it again with new sand etc etc, like a brand new tank. At least then there's no risk of anything being passed on to my next generation of fish.

Thanks, no head swelling, just like helping the little guys out.

dont add new fish to a sick tank. it only causes stress and makes it hard to get rid of the ick....i wouldnt recomend a total water change either. just treat the ick, it will go away. and wait awhile to add any new fish.

You should read this article about Ich. It says that if there is no fish left in the tank, the ich will die off in two weeks, or something to that affect. I used the salt treatment and raised temp. to 84 and it worked great. It beats using those medications and its quicker. Read the article and decide for yourself. But if your last fish does not make it, you shouldnt have to start over with your tank because from what I read, if there is no life in the tank then the ich will not survive.
Good Luck

Raising the temperature and addind salt did nothing for my tank. I have scaleless fish but used medication anyways, just smaller doses. Within days the ich had cleared up. So, my suggestion is to give this a try if the salt doesnt work. The medicine was called "nox-ich". Just make sure to read the label because some are good for certain fish, while some are not.
