So, I have Kamiko, the sick betta in one tank, and now my divided boys, Pina Colada and Cherrkykins have what appears to be ich/white spot. I noticed it on sunday, as little salt-like grains on their fins, so I turned the heater up to 84, did a 100% change, vacced all the sand out completely and left the tank bare-bottomed. I cleaned all their plants and plant pots etc, and treated their new water with Interpet 6 white spot treatment. 3 days on - yesterday - no change... except, cherrykins is lethargic and laying on his side on the bottom, and pina is propped under the heater, which is stuck to the side diagonally, and he is on his side too, but practically horizontal.

Both still come to the top for feeding, and seem active and able to swim normally. Neither show any further symptoms, water is fine, everything seems normal, but the grains are still there, and they keep doing this 'I'm about to die" lying down thing.

What do I do next?

Perhaps give up keeping bettas :-(

the 100% water change probably wasn`t best as white spot is normaly caused by stress. so doing a huge water change, then rapidly cranking the temp up has probably shocked the fish more...

just keep treating with the wite spot meds and keep an eye on them

I've been changing 100% every 4 days anyway because I haven't bought a filter yet, but I thought you had to change the water and clean out the substrate as soon as white spot was 'spotted'?? also, the temp increase was advised by lots of posts. I actually have the tank set at 80 so it is an increase, but not as dramatic as it might have been.

I'll just keep going then... thank you :)

well the fish are probably stressed due to getting thrown around every 4 days ect. and yes the temp should go up but do it gradually so as not to shock them to much.

i`s also recomend getting a filter as soon as possible

The filter is on its way :) But I do have a question... if the fish are stressed getting thrown around every 4 days, how do people keep them successfully in unfiltered small bowls/tanks, and doing water changes every few days? I researched well before buying my bettas, and found alot of people keep them unfiltered because they don't like the water movement. ?

personally i have no idea....

I would never inflict that on any of my fish

Do you keep bettas though? I do believe they are different.. I am new to bettas, and I do have an established community tank, filtered of course... but I read, and was told here, in fact, that bettas do fine in small (ish) unfiltered bowls or tanks. Bettas prefer still water, all that stuff. *shrugs* Just seems I am getting conflicting information :/

there are the two scold of thought on it some people keep bettas in bowls smaller than my fist, where as the 2 bettas we keep are in filterd aquaria, the smalled beig 5 gallons the other being just short of 9, the filter flow has been turneed down on the filters but both bettas are quite happy in them

Oh god, I wouldn't keep a betta in a tiny bowl! One has a 2.5g and the other 2 are in a 12g which is divided into 3, so 4g each. I would have the third in the divided tank too, if he wasn't sick. :( Either way, aside from the size of tank, I have read alot of places that say they don't need filtration. *shrugs*

they don`t need water agitation as they tend to breath through their labarinth (the glad lhat alowes them to breath fresh air) so low o2 levels in the water don`t bother them. but they still crap and feel the effects of ammonia, nitrite and nitrates, aswell as being suseptable to temprature change
