Hi all,

Just over a week or so i saw 7 white spots on one of my mollys tails and today has only 2 left. The fish seem happy at the moment and look peacefull and wasnt going to even treat the tank but i then decided to start treatment today using TAP Aqurarium Docter Fast Acting Whitespot Treament. It says it's a very rapid 48 hour cure for whitespot.

Here are the instructions =

Add 1ml per gallon (4.5 ltrs) using the measuring cup provided
For nomal Whitespot one does is sufficient.
For stubborn cases re-dosing is possible after 48 hours.
Remove aquarium carbon before use.

Does all this sound ok?...Kind Regards Thuggerz

whitespot has stages of life in which when the spots appear they are growing then these fall off in like small cysts - when the cysts burst - (into free swimming) there are many new "organisms" that try to then find a host to start the cycle over again and thus invade a fish

there is advice about turning up the temperature and leaving the lights off and not feeding them as much - so the 48 hour medication seems a little out of sink with the life-cycle stages of whitespot

when these organisms are in the free swimming stage - white spot treatment is only effective so regular dosing and for aperod of time will ensure that as these cysts burst into free swimmers - the treatment gets as many nasties as it can

for how long to treat i do not know but my guess is that at a higher temperature of the water the life cycle of "ich" will increase thus speeding up thier evolution in the tank so that as regular dosing with treatment is added it makes sure to keep on killing the blighters

not sure about it killing whitespot in 48hrs as the blighters settle in the gravel and these "cysts" wl be at different stages in their cycle - unless of course it GUARANTEES to kill all stages of their life cycle??

Hi Rob w, the article you sent was very helpfull but i have one more question. In the article theres a section on Treatment Times.

Treatment Times -

Most products don’t really give you a good time frame for using their product. With that in mind I will give what I recommend to give you and idea. After you first notice Ich you need to treat. It is my opinion that you need to treat daily for at least 10 days but I prefer 12. After that time then I will go to every other day for a treatment until I have reached the 16 day mark. Another thing to remember here is that you need to treat regardless of time for at least 3 preferably 4 days after you see the last White Spot fall off. With my method you will have every parasite dealt with by the end of the 16th day.

My Treatment Instuctions -

Add 1ml per gallon (4.5 ltrs) using the measuring cup provided
For nomal Whitespot one does is sufficient.
For stubborn cases re-dosing is possible after 48 hours.
Do not re-dose more than 3 times in any month
Remove aquarium carbon before use.

Do you think i should go with the article rather than the instructions on the box?

Thanx for your time! :)

hi
glad to know it was of help to you - to be honest if i had a case of "ich" in my tank i would want to treat for a "good/lengthy" period of time - relating it to humans as we use antibiotics we have to take a full course this can sometimes be 7, 10 or 21 days regarding whatever the infection we are treating -- ok there is treamtnets that enable us to take 1 tablet and it clears it !! - not sure whether this "ich" treatment can do the same - i.e 1 dose will suffice!!

so to use a product for only a minimal time :

1) it may be still in the tank
2) it may re-appear when we think we have got rid of the "ich"
3) we have to buy more treatment - as when we think it has gone and the treatment goes past a "shelf-life and becomes in-effective

maybe with this "ich" medication it may take a re-dosing of up to 3 times to make sure as many "ich" nasties are gone

if between dosing is 2 days then 3 further doses will be going on for 8 days - or to leave treatments for 3 days between dosing the time frame is going on for 12 days worth of treatment

if u are going to stick to the instructions on the bottle as that IS the medication you are using and the article may be referring to anohter whitespot treatment - i would only dose to the maximum on the bottle as prescribed - hopefully that may do it

dont know if i'm teling you how to suck eggs here - but carbon removes all medications so becomes useless - even plant food!!!

hop that makes sense!!???

Stick with the dosing levels on the back of the pack as the different makes will vary. For example the one I use instructs to re-dose every 48 hours.

Ich has 3 stages. The first is the visible spots on the fish and this stage is not treatable. The second is where the infection lives in the substrate at the bottom of the tank. The third stage is where it moves about the tank looking for new fish to infect. The second and third stages are where it is treatable.

Make sure you complete the course as just because the spots my go the infection could still be in the tank. I always treat for a few days longer.

NB. You also need to be aware that most ich treatments can harm sensitive and scaleless fish such as Corys and you are recommended to reduce the doseage by 25-50%
