I recently lost all my fish to ich. Came from someone at Petsmart chasing the fish around so bad they got stressed and sick! As everything in my tank was just fine before then. Anyway, I need to know how long it will take to get my tank healthy enough to add fish again. I treated my fish with medicine bought at Petsmart. Two days later I did a 20% water change. The next day I changed it again. Eventually all my fish were dead. Now I have let the tank sit for several days with the heat turned up to somewhere in the mid 80's. It's a 50 gallon tank and I had long black skirt tetras in it.
Thanks for any help!

It was recommended to me to keep the tank at that temp for 2 weeks to a month. The heat only kills them in free floating stage, and leaving the temp for that long will ensure its dead.

ALSO, NEVERRRRR NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVERRRRRRRR BUY ANYTHING FROM PETSMART, PETCO, ANY BULLCRAP LIKE THAT! always go to fish stores or breeder or even online in u got the money.
I would edit that comment, as slandering specific LFS can get our awesome moderators in trouble. Also, I have bought many wonderful fish from both Petco and Petsmart. There is no specific place where you SHOULD buy fish. Locally owned shops, breeders, and online sellers can get you just as bad as any chain. Telling someone to NEVER shop at those places is bad advice. As long as you know what to look for, you can get healthy fish from anywhere. Plus, this is what a quarantine tank is for.

Don't be discouraged Holly. You can buy many fine fish anywhere you want. Just be careful where you get advice. Researching things online is a good place to start, and many members of this forum can answer just about any question you have.

Thanks! I know I have always done my research before I go to the store. It's amazing the advise you get there! It's really not that hard to learn!

When I came to this sight a few months ago, I was a complete dummy when it came to fish lol. And I got my feelings hurt being told everything I was doing wrong (I was doing a lot wrong). But I took in what everyone told me and have a great community and another that I am about to cycle.

well from MY experience ive always lost any goldfish or tetras or any of those little fish you find at big stores like that, always. the longest they lived was maybe a month, ever since i started going to specialty stores that are only for fish its been smooth sailin. for the most part. so sorry to sound bias but petcos, petsmarts petcitys have failed me almost everytime, and not just fish. rodents and frogs to..maybe it depends on the location and workers that take care of the animals...iiiiidk.

Yes, it does depend on the individual staff at individual branches of the chain.

You need to remember that if your tank is sitting empty (ie no fish) for any length of time, then your filter bacteria will be dying off. In your case, you will need to completely re-cycle the filter.
