Hi

Here's the problem I have, I have a heavily planted 125 litre tank with CO2 injection, oxygen aeration, fish wise I have 2x clown loach, 3x Japonica Shrimps, 1x Angel Fish, 1x Reed/Snake Fish, 3x X-Ray tetras, 4x Platies, 2x Dwarf Gouramis and 1x Plec.

The issue I have is jsut short of a week after introducing a couple of new fish (that appeared very healthy) I noticed a couple of whitespots on the Tetras and the Clown Loach, nothing heavy just a couple on each fish. I do have some Pets at Home White Spot treatment which contains Malachite Green 4%, Acriflavine 0.005% and Quinine Sulphate 0.004% the same as King British White Spot, but I read that the Malachite Green would undoubtedly kill the shrimps, and likely to kill the plants too, as well as damage the Clown Loaches skin.

I have raised the temperature to around 29 degrees celcius to speed up the cycle of the parasite but I'm not sure what medicine I can use in this setup. I don't have a spare tank either to isolate the fish.

I have noticed today that a couple of spots have appeared on my Dwarf Gouramis and the Platies, I have also noticed that one of my Platies now has minor fin rot on its tail.

I really hope someone can help me, I have ready about salt but have also read that this will have dire effects on the plants too.

Can I really get rid of the Ich with raising the temperature if so how high would I need to go, and has anyone had an experiences of using these meds with this kind of setup???

Thanks Andrew

I have a very similar problem in my tank, so if you find a workable solution i'd love to hear it. My situation gets even a little more complicated though as i have a few fish that are sub-tropical, and not tolerant of salt.

For your tank though, you may be able to get by with raising the temperature and adding half the recommended doses of salt. I got rid of my last ich outbreak by using this method. I forget the exact temperature that causes ich to stop reproducing but I believe its somewhere in the high 80's fahrenheit. I believe 90 or 91 degrees kills them. I think I gradually raised mine all the way to 88 degrees. I added half-doses of salt and maintained this temperature for about 10 days and my ich problem was solved. Looking back I'm shocked my scaleless sub-tropical fish survived this, but they did. I didn't have any fish deaths. Raising the temp very slowly is key. Good luck :good:

Im not totally sure, but can you not transfer your shrimp temporarily to another tank? The treatment will take 10 days. The treatment is a 2 dose treatment. I'd just go for it. I did this same treatment a couple of weeks ago in a planted tank and my plants are fine.

The temperature just speeds the life cycle up on the white spot, it doesn't kill it.
