Ich And Carbon

Hi there, i've read the post on how the ich stages progress and what to do to speed it up. I have a 5gal WaterHome 5 fish tank, there are 2 cartridge filters that sit just under the hood and they contain carbon and both are sealed...do i need to remove all traces of carbon for the treatment to work?....if i do have to remove all the carbon then i have to remove the cartridge filters as the carbon is sealed inside and all my bacteria will die...maybe i can move the cartridge actally into the tank water and stick in the corner and then put in the treatment?
