I recently acquired a 5 gallon six-sided tall glass tank from a friend of mine. It did not come with anything but i have a 23watt flourscent and heater tat remains at 82F. I plan to keep plants (java fern and some others) with sand substrate. Can i keep one krib in it? I'm thinking of a female since they're smaller in size. I also have a corner filter.

That might be a bit small for her. The pair I have are in a 4 foot tank. They're very active and use the whole tank to cruise around.

--how about an african butterfly fish? I've read those are ok by themselves and do not need a large tank -- although when full grown it would probably appreciate something bigger. I don't know a lot about african butterfly fish --just starting to research them as I'm interested in getting one myself!

I wouldn't go for a krib but if you insist on cichlids - some multifasciatus shell-dwellers could work provided you research them and meet their requirements first.
