I'm going to be giving my 30 gallon tank a makeover, and switching to live plants is one of the things on my list. I want to get the low light pack from That Fish Place. plant pack
I checked the bulb I currently have, and if I did the math right, it gives off fewer than 1 watt per gallon.

So, I know I need a new light. Can I get away with a stronger fluorescent bulb, or do I need to get a HO fluorescent bulb?
Also, will I need to get a CO2 unit?

Please let me know if more info is needed to answer my questions. :)

If you take a look at the Planted Journals Forum you should get a good idea of the various ways of setting up a planted tank. Llj`s journals are good if you want to go low cost, slow growth and easy maintenance.

You can also like at my journals, or many others, that are high tech grow anything tanks ie. idiots with wallets bigger than their brains.

If you go low light, then an Llj type tank will be your best bet. Anything >2WPG and you will need to consider reading the pinned EI article.

To up your lighting you'ld need to be doing DIY for real i.e. drilling holes etc. how far do you want to go and what exactly are you looking to achieve?

what are the dimensions of ur tank if it is 2 or 3 foot then get an overtank lumiare of ebay for 45- 60 pounds

The dimensions of my tank are 30" Long, 12" Wide, and 17" High.

I don't want an entirely planted tank, just a few areas of plants where my fish can hide.

Thanks for pointing me to the planted journals forum - I hadn't seen it before.

Can someone explain the need for weekly water changes? Edit - never mind. I just started reading the pinned EI article and it answered my question.
