Hi all,

I bought some platys from my LFS today and as it turned out they are all females and one of them looks particularly 'pot bellied' compared to the others, and I have looked for a gravid spot and cant see one..

Is there anyway she is still pregnant? Only hope..

Thanks, D.

the gravid spot isnt a good indicator..
is she sticking near plants or lower down in the tank?

Most of the time, yes, but she will occasionally 'show her face' so to speak.. And if she is pregnants its in the early stages, thus my second question, how long does the whole pregnancy thing last?

Thanks, D.

i think its 4-6 weeks..
are there males in the tank?
and what other fish are in the tank?
No males, but the tank I bought her from had males in.

With her are 6 Cobra Guppies 8 Neon Tetras 2 Female Fighters 2 Clown Loaches and 2 other Platy.

Thanks, D.

I bought a platy back in august, Male and female.
She started to blow up shortly after that. Well, she finally gave birth last week.
which put her at almost 12 weeks. She had about 70 babies. I was able to get rid of all of them though. I kept 4 for some friends and donated the rest to a LFS.

platys have the ability to store sperm and when they are ready to fertilize they will do so.
Maybe you had the conditions she was happy with..
and i never did locate the "gravid spot" on her either.

my platy was pregnant but didnt notice a dark gravid spot either but under the light i could just make out the little eyes of her fry.

Well...

Thanks for all of that but I went downstairs this morning to my mum shouting at me "I think shes having her babies!"..

I took one look at her, and said that she was dead! So outcame the net..and sure enough she was! So she is now floating in a wine glass with some tank water in to be taken back to my LFS tomorrow to complain..

The worst bit was that my 5yo sister was in tears..I said to her that I thought she was pregnant and she was so happy..

So I have instructed my mother to ask for a male platy so that we can have the fry..

Just so I sound knowledgable..how does it all happen..I mean like I know bettas 'wrap'..so how does it happen with platies?
