Hi, My name is Monica and I have 2 male and 2 female platys. Last night I noticed that one of the female platys look kinda a bloated and not to social. My mother thinks that shes pregnant, and to some investigation she is. My other female was being harassed by the male and I think she got impregnate last night. How long should I wait to see if she's pregnant.

Also, I was reading about breeder boxes, but I am a little iffy on those. What works best putting the females in a separate tank (which i do have-empty) or a breeder box. If the breeder box is more efficient, when should i put the female in?

Thanks

I would put her in the spare tank, she wont get stressed out as much - as long as its fully cycled.
And then you also dont have to worry about taking her out of the breeding trap because of getting stressed.

Thanks youngfisher

Here is 2 more questions:

I have read and seen pictures of female platys fully rounded but mine she is rounded on one side and just a bit on the other. Is that normal? I think she is about a week in her gestation, How will I know when she drops her fry?

Im not too sure about this, it could be a lump instead of pregnancy? Maybe constipation? I think some people give them squashed pea's (someone will let you know, not sure if you can do this with platys)

when its pregnant i think they tend to stay in one certain place, and dont swim around much compared to the others. then its just the waiting game.

although i might be wrong - someone will let you know ASAP im sure.

sounds like she might be having problems like maybe cramps, or like youngfisher said it might actually be constipation, lump,
but if she's pregnant make sure the other tank is fully cycled and if not use a breeder trap not net cause some other fish have been known to jump into the top of em and kill all the fry =(.

I have her in a separate tank right now and I added more plants in the tank. She is hiding near the heater and sometimes in the corners of the tank or under the plants.

If she is pregnant and she does drop, how long do I remove her from the tank? I read somewhere that I can not run the filter and use a air stone for the fry, is that true?

I will post pic of her today when I get home from work. This way I can get a good idea if she is or not pregnant.
