My 5G tank seems to be cycled. the nitrates are reasonably high... the ammonia and nitrite goes down relatively soon... under 12 hours and the tank seems to clear up on its own.

now for some questions.

my tank by no means looks nasty and gross. i thought that a properly cycled tank was disgusting and nasty... it looks fine...

is it really safe to start putting the fish in (after a water change of course)

o and also...

is there any way to reduce the flow of the filter... it is creating quite a current and maybe there is some trick of the trade way to slow it down?

thanks.

No, it isn't supposed to look digusting and nasty, save maybe some algae that might've grown during the cycle.

It is safe to put the fish in, after a large water change.

Most filters have an adjustable flow control.

thanks for the response; however the filter i have is a ballsy walmartesque filter... no flow control...
