Because I wanted better plant growth and a better home for my clown loaches, I put a soil underlayer with play sand on top in my 32 gallon. I didn't realize that no nutrients from fish wastes are going to make it into the soil, now.
Assuming I don't vaccum often, will the nutrients in the fish waste be re-absorbed into my plants?
I'm also interested in a way of physically adding nitrates to my soil, without tearing down the tank, because nitrates in my tank water are <10 ppm. There's numerous types of terrestrial fertilizers that can be stuck into soil; can any of these be used in an aquarium? Keep in mind that they will have very little contact with the actual tank water; they will be sealed away in the soil.
Any of this possible?
