Hi,

Yesterday I set up my 2 nutrifin CO2 sytems with fresh dried yeast as the supplied stuff is rubbish (advised by zig). This worked great and was producing lots of bubbles in about an hour, I was a little worried it was maybe too much. I woke up this morning to find that the CO2 level were perfect, as indicated by my Red Sea CO2 indicator which sits in the tank all the time. The other thing I noticed was that the water seemed a bit cloudy, I thought maybe this is a bacteria bloom as I am currently doing a fishless cycle.

Later in the morning I checked how the bubbles where going and noticed that there was yeast and water sitting in the tubes going to the diffusers!!! So I immediatly removed the tubes from the diffusers as to not let any of the yeast in. I have thourghly cleaned the tubes an diffusers and reset up the mixtures in the reactors with about a 3rd of the yeast i had used before.

I have tested the water and everything seems ok but what about this cloudyness?? it doesnt seem to be as bad as it was so do you thing it is yeast in there or a bacteria bloom as I first thought? and what should I do about it?

Do a water change or do small water changes if you think its yeast in the tank, although there is no fish in the tank so harm done, you dont need co2 for this tank with only 1 watt per gallon so maybe leave co2 alone for the moment and just concentrate on the cycle.

also with a diy mix only fill the nutrafin cannister 2/3 with water to allow room for the froth. i've had that same problem about 8 times - i learnt eventually!!

if your worried about the yeast as zig said do a couple of 20% water changes.

Thanks for the advise guys! :D

It was definatly froth that had got into the pipes, but now i've started them with much less yeast there are not as many bubbles coming through which I'm guessing is a good thing. My CO2 indicator is still saying good so its got to be ok. Also I have noticed without doing a water change that the tank isn't cloudy anymore so maybe it was bacteria??? As I'm doing a fishless cycle I didnt really want to mess it up by doing a water change. Plus I am going to be doing a large water change when the cycle is finished to bring the nitrates down, so I'm hoping that this will get rid of any yeast that is in there. Is this a good idea?

I have also made an overflow bottle for the CO2 to stop this from happening again. It consists of a 500ml Coke bottle with inlets and outlets for both reactors, the tube I am using is from some sea booms for fishing which look really cool cus their bright green. Just waiting for the silicon to go off before I connect it up. I'm also trying to work out a way of hanging the reactors on the wall to keep them above the diffusers. Think I'm going to use the tank hangers that came with them and mod them so they will hang on a screw.

Finally and most importantly I've upgraded my tank some more.... I now have 2 WPG!!!!
I decided to mod my clear seal hood so it would take another bulb. I have cut out a hole behind the original bulb where there was a redundant space. This space is supposed to be for a starter but I dont keep it in there as the hood is flimsy. So this left a nice space to add my second bulb which is a Hagen Sun-glo, I've also attached a Juwel reflector to it. I immediatly noticed the difference, the tank looks alot brighter and the plants now look really green. I'm hoping that the combination of the Sun-glo and the Interper Triplus is a good combination but I'm guessing its down to colour preferance. As both bulbs are on seperate timers do you think it would be a good idea to have them timed so they come on slightly appart in the morning? I've heard this can be better for your fish as they can adjust to the light better. what do you think?

What happens when you want to change a mix, do you have to unhook the second reactor as well because both are connected to the same coke bottle?

Once the tank is cycled do a large water change to ensure you remove the yeast before you add any fish, if this happened to you and there were fish in the tank you would probably have had some casualties, it can kill the fish.

I guess it cant do any harm to have the lights slightly staggered although i wouldnt unduly worry about it, its allready daylight before my own lights come on anyway and the fish are moving about the tank before i hit them with 3 WPG.

Well in answer to the first bit I have bought some air line clamps as to not lose pressure when I remove one of the reactors. thought this would be the perfect solution, also water will not come up from the tank when I remove one.

I will be doing a 50% change when the cycle is done, so that was planned already. This should solve any problems with the yeast hopefully.

Mite give the light thing a go, as u say shouldn't do any harm, think i'll stagger them by half an hour.

Thanks for all your help again zig! :D

yeah i stagger my 4 tubes by 1 hour between first and last (15 min gap between tubes). simulates sunrise/sunset and looks kind of neat.

Do you have a siesta period as well jimbooo? If so do u stagger the bulbs when the siesta starts and finishes?
