So, i go into the local fish store, its a pets at home, and i figured id see what they had in as i was across the road doing food shopping.

Well they had a nice selection of stuff in this delivery. But i noticed their female siamese fighting fish looked a bit odd, and grabbed the smartest looking member of staff.

pointed it out, they fetched their manager, and manager goes "oh, #28###. They're paradise fish, albino's". Asked him how much he wanted for them and he said £1.50 each. I took the lot.

Problem is, never kept a gourami before. Got no idea what their going to be like, all i know is they grow to about 8cm and are apparently considered pretty peaceful.

So can someone give me some more info and advice on these stunning fish??

So they're going into my 120l community tank. Kept with some very peaceful neon tetras, and some female fighting fish. I think i'll need to upgrade the tank at some point as they'll likely outgrow it, thats no worries.

And apparently, they're wild caught. So who knows. F1 albino gourami in a few months anyone?

Paradise fish do best in coolwater and will probably beat the crap out of each other in a tank that size. Look up Macropodus opercularis.

This is why you should always research before you buy
Paradise Fish have individual temperament, some are peaceful and some are very aggressive. But most of the time, they are aggressive and very territorial.

Aye, wild ones come in grey, not albino.

Fair enough.
Paradise fish are a less aggressive cousin of betta not gourami. Online reports of temperament vary -some paradise fish are total wimps while others are almost as aggressive as betta. I have 4 (2m,2f) in one tank but they are from a very docile strain, had them for 6 months and zero agression. However wouldn't advise mixing them with betta or gourami as fatal bullying and fights may ensue.I had to remove my paradise fish after 20 mins from a tank with a large 3 spot gourami as it almost killed them all.

Thanks for that, good info there.

Well we currently have 6 female paradise fish in with 6 female Betta, and there's no aggression as of now, though it did throw the Betta dominance order to hell so they squabbled between themselves for a couple of days.

I had one sleeper male which ended up causing chaos in the tank, so I had 2 choices, put him in a tiny Betta display box, or try him in with my Male Betta. I tried him in the display box but he showed signs of stress near enough instantly. SO no other options tried him in with the male Betta, and watched them like a hawk for 4 hours.

And surprisingly, upon initial entry of the male paradise fish my Male Betta flared and very casually followed him around, completely unaggresive, more dominance showing than anything, and then they set about their own personal business, it's incredible, their coexisting perfectly. This morning I checked the tank again in case anything had gone wrong overnight, but both fish are in perfect health and coexisting.
